The island is populated by about 35,217 persons (2001) and has an estimated population growth rate of 1.3%. English is the official language used by the citizens of St. Kitts. St. Kitts has one of the higher literacy rates in the Caribbean at 98%. This has created a labour pool of highly trainable workers that are able to adopt to fast paced businesses

Government

The Government of St. Kitts is a parliament democracy within the Commonwealth of Nations. Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, is the head of the Federation and is represented on St. Kitts by a Governor-General.

Time

St. Kitts uses Atlantic Standard Time throughout the year. The time is set to 4 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (-4 GMT). Daylight Saving Time is not observed.

Legal System

The legal system is based upon English Common Law and is served by the multi-state Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court compromising High Court of Justice, and a Court of Appeal. Her Majesty’s Privy Council in London serves as the final appellant court.

Capital City of Basseterre

Basseterre is the capital of St. Kitts and it is the administrative capital of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. The Robert L Bradshaw International Airport, The Deep Water Port (Cargo), Basseterre Ferry Terminal and Port Zante are all located in the capital offering quick and easy access to patrons. There is a taxi stand in the center of the city and a bus terminal approximately two blocks away providing the main sources of public transportation for the island.

All commercial banks have their head offices located in the city within walking distance of each other. Basseterre also offers convenient shopping with two mall centers and a host of duty free stores and boutiques. Whether you are in search of office supplies or a fine cigar you will find it within a stones throw in Basseterre.  There is a wide variety of culinary choices in Basseterre ranging from local restaurants to international fast food chains. Internet Cafes keep the business community connected during meal breaks ensuring that no opportunity is missed.
